Some of you crazy people might wonder ‘Gee, Alex, why are you starting a blog? A marketing blog? Really?’
To you, my friends, I write this post.
Why I wanted to start writing
The idea behind this blog is simple.
In the last ten years or so, I have done a lot in the marketing world. I have launched businesses, failed more than I can count, sold a company, and more.
I’ve learned a lot.
At my current company, I’ve realised my learning has X10. I learn every day by doing, much more than ever before. I’m put in front of challenges I’ve never thought I’d have to face.
Today, I’ve decided to start documenting the journey.
Documenting the journey
Back when I was a brand new poker player, I started a blog. Every day, sometimes multiple times a day, I would share hands I played along with my thoughts. It was so engaging and challenging to have to put my thoughts down for everyone to see.
Failed at something? Everyone will see.
Thought I did amazing but actually did a shit play? I’ll get told off publicly.
Did something quite good? Might get some praise.
It was all out there to see. I sometimes go back and read some of these entries today and realise how much they’ve helped me fine-tune my game.
This is exactly what I want to achieve with this blog. I want to share my journey, my fails, my wins, my wins that actually are fails, and everything else.
I want to challenge my own thinking. I want to document what I’ve done, how I’ve done it, and why; just so people can tell me how stupid that was.
Leaving a trace
I want something to show for.
You know the age-old ‘nature vs. nurture’ argument? Debating athletes, there’s always someone to say ‘he got it easy, he was born with the talent’.
I say fuck that. You haven’t see the hours of practice, the sweat, and the tears.
I want this blog to be exactly that. I want to be able to talk to anyone about my work 20 years down the line, and when they ask why I do something a certain way; I want to point them here.
This is why.
Why do I believe in something? Because I did before. I tested it. It’s all here. I’m not making shit up.
Finally, there might be scope to influence and help some people along the way.
Turns out my poker blog helped a lot of people back then. Some even still read it today, for some reason. Silly old me documenting my journey from a complete noob to a professional player inspired some people. Good stuff.
Hopefully, this blog will do the same. I will share experiments, results, tactics, numbers, and data. Maybe someone somewhere will find these interesting enough. If you do, make sure you let me know. I’ll buy you a cyber cup of coffee.
